How Does Red Team Testing Expose Hidden Security Gaps?

Red Team Testing mimics real-world cyberattacks to find hidden vulnerabilities, evaluate your security defenses, and improve incident response.

Cyber Security

Hello readers! When your IT security team assures you that your company is safe but then a hacker manages to penetrate it anyway, what happens?

It's a situation that a red team test helps to resolve.

In contrast to vulnerability assessment that scans the computer systems of your company for vulnerabilities, a red team simulation acts just as if it was a criminal trying to break in. It researches the company, discovers possible ways of getting in, tries to maneuver in the system, and tests whether security personnel will be able to detect and stop the activity. The point isn't to inflict any damage. Rather, it's about revealing how the process could take place.

I think this strategy works especially well for the following reason. The problem with cybersecurity lies not in technical issues per se. A weak password, excessive user rights, poor monitoring, an unprotected application, or the carelessness of your staff – none of these things by themselves would pose any big threat to your company. Problems start when hackers use all these things together to launch an attack.

What Does ‘Red Team Testing’ Mean?

This testing is a sort of controlled cybersecurity exercise that simulates the behaviour of a real-world threat actor. In this simulated setup and environment, ethical hackers utilize the tricks, techniques, and tactics of real hackers to test how well the system of an organization can detect, respond, or prevent a cyberattack.

Prior to the exercises, the security professionals had to get the approval and authorization from the organization.

It is more than just locating such weak spots individually. The main idea is to evaluate the possibility of forming a potential way to attack using such weak spots.

For instance, if an enterprise possesses an employee's account with too many permissions, that will be viewed as not very serious during the standard vulnerability assessment process. On the contrary, if a red team can penetrate the system through this account and then go on to another one in order to gain access to financial information, then the finding becomes a lot more significant.

Thus, the red team technique provides security management with valuable insights into the business risks.

Penetration Testing Vs. Red Team Testing

There is a similarity between red team testing and vulnerability assessment and penetration testing; however, they do not have exactly the same function.

Penetration testing typically concentrates on the discovery of exploitable vulnerabilities. Red team testing is a larger-scale approach and seeks to simulate an attacker trying to achieve some goal. IBM differentiates red team testing from penetration testing by emphasizing the realistic adversary viewpoint and the performance of the defense mechanisms.

Penetration Testing

Red Team Testing

Generally follows a defined technical scope

Examines wider attack surface

Detects exploitable security loopholes

Tests realistic attack paths

Measures vulnerability exposure

Measures detection, prevention, and response

Concentrates on technical loopholes

Tests processes, people, and response

May test individual systems

Achieve specific defined objectives

What Techniques and Tools Do Red Teams Use?

The use of tools and techniques in red teaming exercises is the same as the ones employed by actual attackers.

Some of the tools and techniques that can be used in red teaming exercises include:

Social Engineering

It is done through phishing, smishing, vishing, spear phishing, and whale phishing in order to acquire confidential information or gain entry into corporate computer networks through unwitting employees.

Physical Security Testing

Testing the physical security controls of an organization and its surveillance and alarm systems.

Application Penetration Testing

Testing web applications to identify security risks that result from coding mistakes such as SQL injection.

On the other hand, red team professionals can also opt for endpoint management to detect potential endpoint loopholes. This will also enable them to resolve security issues if there are any.

Network sniffing

Network sniffing is used to obtain information regarding the IT system configuration and user credentials.

Tainting Shared Content

Contamination of the network drive or any other form of shared storage device with malicious content such that it executes itself when the user unknowingly opens the file.

Brute Forcing Technique

Password guessing using credentials obtained from previous breaches or commonly known passwords.

How Do Red Teams Perform Their Tests?

The red team testers perform their tests similar to how real hackers would do it, in an elaborate process of testing your cybersecurity measures in order to reveal your vulnerabilities.

The process followed by the testers is composed of five steps:

Define the Scope

Setting out clearly defined objectives, targets, and boundaries of the tests.

Reconnaissance

Obtaining information from the company publicly, including the company's online presence, personnel, and points of entry.

Attack Planning and Simulation

Creation of attack strategies that may include social engineering methods such as phishing, exploiting vulnerabilities, and poor network configuration. Once the tester gains access, he then moves to the next systems and elevate privileges.

Response and Evasion Techniques

The hackers employ different approaches depending on the security mechanisms that are employed in the identification of their activities and evasion from being identified.

Reporting and Follow-Up

The testers create a report of the results, attack path, and the impact of the attacks. Recommendations are also included.

What are the Primary Benefits of Red Team Testing?

There are several benefits of conducting red team testing. By virtue of being based on real-life attack scenarios, red team testing provides vital insights that go beyond what is provided by traditional penetration testing techniques. They culminate in three important advantages that will aid any organization in building more robust internal defenses.

Improved Incident Detection and Handling

It will show an organization how well it can handle and detect incidents and potential threats from within and thus bring about any issues with monitoring tools and procedures for dealing with such incidents.

Increased Security within the Organization

The technique helps to find out vulnerabilities that are not covered by traditional pen-testing procedures. These include over-privileged accounts, poorly secured service accounts, and inadequate network segmentation.

Effective Vulnerability Fixing Before Attack

The simulated attack scenarios allow finding and fixing vulnerabilities before any actual attack.

By adopting the perspective of an attacker, red team testing provides organizations with all the required insights.

What Types of Security Vulnerabilities Does Red Team Testing Find?

Red teaming exercises are effective in exposing vulnerabilities within various levels of the security structure of the organization being tested. People, process, and technology all work together to form the organizational security environment.

Access Issues and Hidden Identity

Stolen credentials allow an attacker to gain access to networks that are not meant for their use.

A red team will be able to test the level of permissions that each of the employees' credentials have. The results of such a test can be valuable in improving access control and identity and privilege management. In this regard, taking a Zero Trust Security strategy would also be valuable.

Poor and Defective Network Segmentation

Proper network segmentation is capable of limiting the movements of an attacker after gaining initial access.

Businesses also have the option to execute network penetration testing to check access controls, segmentation, and other lateral movement routes.

Lack of proper network segmentation means that a compromised workstation can serve as the gateway into servers, applications, and sensitive databases.

Monitoring Security Blind Spots

Even though there are many security monitoring tools available, attackers' actions may still go unnoticed due to improper configuration of the tools, lack of logging, or an inefficient alerting system.

The results of a red teaming exercise will indicate what actions lead to triggering alerts, while others go unnoticed.

Example of Red Team Testing in Practice

Think of an online store with its customer portal.

Red team members start by reviewing the information publicly available and identify the exposure of the application component. They identify the weakness that would give limited access.

The access gained does not immediately result in the exposure of the customer information.

Nevertheless, the team learns that the compromised environment has access to an internal service account. It has more permissions than required. Also, they realize that network segmentation does not adequately limit the movement towards the other internal system.

Now the organization understands things quite differently.

These individual weaknesses may look like moderate risks when considered separately. But together, they may create a route towards the critical asset.

The red team can now document the path and indicate which control would prevent the attack at each step of the way.

This is the sort of knowledge that I believe would be more valuable than just saying there are three vulnerabilities.

Why Do Businesses and Organizations Opt for Red Team Testing?

This is all about a different perspective.

Conventional security professionals almost always focus on defending the system. But the Red Team professionals take a different route and approach. They do the exact opposite, with a reverse mindset. These professionals put their legs into the shoes of hackers, and verify whether can penetrate a system successfully or not.

This enables organizations to find security loopholes and weaknesses before hackers exploit them to cause damage. After finding the underlying issues, businesses can rectify them to strengthen their cybersecurity defence.

Conclusion

Red team testing involves thinking outside the box. They try to imitate what real hackers and cyber attackers would do in a real-world scenario.

Red teaming alters the perception of cybersecurity at a business level.

Instead of determining whether there is a vulnerability, it determines whether an attacker will use it to accomplish something beneficial.

The change creates a more defined picture of security risks.

In a good red team exercise, you will discover vulnerabilities in the management of identities, awareness of employees, segmentation of networks, application security, monitoring, and incident response. Even better, you will see how small weaknesses can come together to form a single attack vector.

That is what I see as the true purpose of this method. Security is not about the tools you have. It is about knowing whether you can use them together in case someone tries to break them.

Red team testing offers organizations the chance to do just that.
